Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones has published a children’s book based on his relationship with his grandfather Gus Dupree. Richards, who recently became a grandfather for the fifth time, says that publishing the book will help him to “raise the profile of grandfathers”.
“The first grandchild you try to ignore in a way” explained the Rock ‘n’ Roll elder, “not the child, the fact. Then when they are old enough to say, ‘grandpa’ and you realise they are talking to you, and it’s like ‘oh right…’. But I’m growing into it.”
The book, Gus & Me, is illustrated by Richards’ daughter Theodora and tells the story of the man who inspired him to take up music.
“He was a great kick up the rear for me musically,” said the guitarist. “I’ve always wanted to pay homage to Gus. He gave me my first guitar when I was nine and set me on my way.”
“I thought about grandfathers and the relationshp between grandchildren and grandfathers and what a great thing it can be if it can happen,” said the 70-year-old rocker. “The bond, the special bond, between kids and grandparents is unique and should be treasured. May I be as great a grandfather as Gus was to me.”
“I think you grow into,” said Richards, “I mean it’s not something you think about when you’re younger, it just happens and suddenly there your are with grandchildren. Grandparents can do great things with the kids and since I am one, I am here to raise the profile of grandfathers.”
