Prime Minister and Government become first to endorse International Men’s Day

October 27, 2016 by Inside MAN 17 Comments

During Parliamentary questions today on whether the Government was going to mark International Men’s Day on 19 November, it was revealed that the Prime Minster, Rt Hon Theresa May MP, supports the important issues the Day seeks to address and highlight:

“I recognise the important issues that this event seeks to highlight, including men’s health, male suicide rates and the underperformance of boys in schools, these are serious issues that must be addressed in a considered way.”

This was further supported by Government Ministers with Caroline Dinenage MP, Parliamentary under Secretary of State for Women, Equalities and Early Years, who stated:

“…as parents of sons up and down the country we will all be conscious about the issues he has mentioned and the Prime Minister has mentioned.”

“International Men’s Day in the UK does take a very gender-inclusive approach and therefore believes that issues affecting women and girls are also to be resolved”

“I am aware that there are 60 countries around the world that celebrate International Men’s Day and there are various different ways that they do that, focusing on men’s health and wellbeing, highlighting discrimination against men and any inequalities they face, improving gender relations and gender equality. This creates a safer world for everybody, Mr Speaker, and is always to be commended.”

This was the first endorsement by a Prime Minister and Government in the UK.

The International Men’s Day team in the UK, said: “This welcome Prime Ministerial and Government endorsement clearly proves there is now growing acceptance and recognition of issues of inequality that affect men and boys, and, a need to take these seriously. This is a landmark moment. It gives a clear signal to both politicians and the public sector of the need to step up to the plate and ensure that practical policies and action is taken to address them.

“This endorsement will provide comfort and extra impetus to charities, professional  and organisations already working hard to support these issues and often struggle to have them recognised.

“There are at least 25 events already marking the Day right across the UK, and there is still plenty of time to join these events or set up your own. These range from health days, education events and conferences. The full list can be found at www.ukmensday.org.uk/events”

The UK theme for the Day continues to be Making a Difference for Men and Boys.

The theme is designed to help more people consider what action we can all take to Make a Difference by addressing some of the issues that affect Men and Boys such as:

  • The high male suicide rate
  • The challenges faced by boys and men at all stages of education including attainment
  • Men’s health, shorter life expectancy and workplace deaths
  • The challenges faced by the most marginalised men and boys in society (for instance, homeless men, boys in care and the high rate of male deaths in custody)
  • Male victims of violence, including sexual violence
  • The challenges faced by men as parents, particularly new fathers and separated fathers
  • Male victims and survivors of sexual abuse, rape, sexual exploitation, domestic abuse, forced marriage, honour-based crime, stalking and slavery
  • The negative portrayal of men, boys and fathers

The key issue of focus at a national level for 2016 is “supporting boys with their academic, employment, personal, social and health education“. There will also be a continuation of the attention on male suicide. International Men’s day also coincides with International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day.

“Male victims of violence, including sexual violence”

And yet this government, like every one before it, sits back and ignores the fact male boys up and down the country are genitally mutilated and sexually suppressed on the NHS as well as in private healthcare, even though “circumcision” (nice euphemism) is ILLEGAL under the Offences Against the Person Act 1861 and would need a parliamentary override to make legal. Yet it brought in new legislation making FGM illegal recently, despite FGM already being illegal. Females matter but males do not. Words mean nothing.

That comes next, and when it does, a hard rain is going to fall.

Exactly. “Our day will come”. Once the general population really start to grasp the horror of MGM, those in power who have supported it are in child-sex-abuse land. Good Luck to them then.

The folk theory is FGM is far worse. The opposite is true.

Actually I think words mean everything. Just that words don’t mean the job is done. It is up to us now to hold them to their words so their actions count.
Just because America declared war on Japan after Pearl didn’t mean the war was over, but those words sure did count.
You can’t say men and boys matter and continue to cut baby boys. Every little step they take in this direction, every word they say, is a death knell to the baby cutting industry.
Every inch we take can’t be taken back.

Truly a landmark moment. Fantastic step forward.

There is already an IWD, but still female politicians want to make IMD all about females.

I noticed that. It’s like a disclaimer, It’s basically like those supporting a day for helping cats in a society that almost exclusively helps dogs (and ignores the plight of cat) having to state that cats are important too when we know because that’s what society focuses on the rest of the time.

Some are so selfish and totalitarian that to them acknowledging an having a day to help one sided issues and problems means the other side is in danger of being thrown under the bus when in fact they’re the ones supported most.

Thing is on IWD I’d wager they have no such disclaimer stating that men matter too

It is indeed a landmark. With my history it is deeply deeply ironic that it is the Conservative Party that contrives to have a female leader and Prime Minister and one open to consider equality issue being about, well, equality. To younger readers I’m sure the 70s is an age away but then it wasn’t at all odd to consider that males and females both needed to be “liberated” from the shackles of sexist stereotypes. Warren Farrell’s “The Myth of Male Power” simply took the analysis to its conclusion that “power” was wielded by few (mainly men). How strange the world is when the really radical voices following through on the idea of equality and “gender” as being about female and male rather than just female, are from Conservatives. I have followed the recent hoo ha about the documentary ” the Red Pill”. the videos by the Director are really interesting as she reflects on her journey from a convinced feminist ready to debunk “mens rights” to someone now looking at issues in a rounder perspective. As she says the commitment to a belief in an ideology had simply blinded her to half a story. Not that she is now some MRA but open to seeing the complexity of “gender”.
Perhaps it does take people unencumbered by an ideological belief to see more clearly. After all if “gender” is a social construct how can one see it fully if almost 50% of the society are to be ignored?

They missed the first instance of sexual violence faced by men Circumcision. We banned unnecessary surgery in dogs ( tail docking, ear cropping) years ago yet we still don’t oppose male genital mutilation.

Good for the UK! it’s a step in the right direction.

    About time.

    I found this excerpt interesting…

“International Men’s Day in the UK does take a very gender-inclusive approach and therefore believes that issues affecting women and girls are also to be resolved”

Isn’t this like a needless disclaimer, done to inform those that would insanely conflate a day about helping men as anti-women that they aren’t ignorant to women’s issues (which have ten times more support and awareness than men’s already)?

InsideMAN is committed to pioneering conversations about men, manhood and masculinity that make a difference. We aim to create spaces where the voices of men, from many different backgrounds, can be heard. It’s time to have a new conversation about men. We'd love you to be a part of it.
